The Flaming Star Nebula, IC40510 viewsThis nebula is illuminated by the variable star AE Aurigae. It is a runaway star that was most likely ejected during a very close encounter of two binary star groups. This encounter, which is also credited with ejecting 2 other runaway stars, Mu Columbae and 53 Arietis, has been traced back to the Trapezium region of the Orion Nebula around two million years ago.

Another horse picture14 viewsNot as spectacular as the recent offerings from Len and Gerald (and Steven Spielberg!), nor as colourful as Dean's - but this is the first time I've managed to image this dark nebula - and without using a telescope!
This was taken using a H-alpha (red) filter - if I get another clear night I'll try with a blue filter to make up a colour image.Feb 03, 2012

The Crystal Ball Nebula, NGC 151421 viewsA famous nebula in the history of astronomy as this was the nebula that caused William Herschel to change his mind as to exactly what was their nature. Until discovering and observing NGC 1514 he thought all nebula were composed of stars he could not resolve but this one clearly looked like a star within a (gas) cloud. He coined the name Planetary Nebula and the rest, as they say, is history.

Spiral Galaxy NGC 156017 viewsNGC 1560 is a relatively nearby dwarf Sd galaxy seen edge-on. It is part of the Maffei/IC342 Group. The latter is an important group just beyond the Local Group but our view of this group is heavily obscured by the Milky Way. Current estimates for the distance of this galaxy vary quite a lot but 12 Mly seems about average.

The answer to life, the universe and everything is...... 3739 viewsThe answer is written in the stars! A little light relief as I decided to image this famous cluster/asterism in the shape of the number 37. No deeper meaning here - just a bit of fun! Sometimes referred to as "IC37" but it is in reality NGC 2169 in Orion.

30 viewsI was checking a galaxy image PGC 24464 taken on 4th January and noticed a trail near the galaxy. The exposure was 30s so it would have to be a fast moving object - or possibly a cosmic ray - although cosmic rays tend to be wiggly streaks usually. I solved the plate in CCDSoft and The Sky indicated that there were in fact two minor planets(not near the trail) in the field of view at that time and added green circles to my image to pinpoint them. Not surprisingly the 21st mag minor planet didn't show!

Horsehead Nebula38 viewsAnother clear night in Southern Spain - I managed to image a number of interesting objects in the Orion area and over 100 galaxies imaged for the supernova project. I now have autofocus working using a TCF-Si focuser and @focus 2 in CCDSoft which makes a tremendous difference. This image of the Horsehead Nebula was derived from 16 X 30 second images added together using the CCDSoft "combine" facility.

Receiving weather satellites with RX1 system28 viewsThe polar NOAA satellites transmit their images on a 137MHz FM downlink which can be picked up with this receiver and fed into the soundcard of a PC for decoding and display.

Spiral Galaxy, NGC 772 (Arp 78)22 viewsNot a spectacular galaxy being a 130 million light years distant but NGC 772 has a very unusual appearance and Arp included it in his Catalogue of Peculiar Galaxies. Close inspection reveals faint clouds around the galaxy particularly to the south. The odd appearance and surrounding clouds are probably the result of interactions with nearby galaxies of which 3 or so are visible in my image.

Satellite Galaxies of M3132 viewsNGC 147 and NGC 185 are two satellite galaxies of M31 but they are not the most spectacular objects. However, with clouds around I opted for the Tak (4-inch Refractor) and the Canon 40D. The UHC filter was used - not sure the colours of the galaxies are too accurate with this filter though.
